The Healthy Spirituality series continues at LaPorte New Church, 812 Indiana Avenue. The topic for the next program on Wednesday, February 15, 6:30-8:00 pm, is How to Feel the Presence of Angels. It will be open for questions and thoughts that many may ponder but perhaps don’t often comfortably voice. The New Church and Healthy Spirituality offers a safe haven for conversations where all are heard with respect, compassion and dignity.
Guided by the New Church pastor, Rev. Kit Billings, we’ll talk about how we’re always connected to angels through our thoughts and feelings and how we can enhance that spiritual connection.
But who and what are angels? The New Church believes that angels are not a superior race of beings, but rather humans who have developed into their highest selves. Much like a caterpillar becomes a butterfly, the earthly state is a preparation for life as an angel in heaven. To become angels, we reject self-centered longings, do what is good, and love God. “They who dwell in heaven are continually advancing to the springtime of life and to a spring more and more delightful and happy the more thousands of years they live; and this to eternity, increasing according to the progress and degrees of love, charity, and faith… In a word, to grow old in heaven is to grow young. Those who have lived in love to the Lord and in charity towards the neighbor become of such beautiful form in the other life.” (Heaven and Hell 415)
And broadly speaking, angels of a particular community are sent to people on earth, to watch over them, to lead them away from evil desires and thoughts, and to instill, to the extent that people freely accept them, desires to do good, thereby governing people’s actions and words by removing evil intentions as far as this is possible.
Reservations are not needed nor an admission fee. All are invited to all New Church programs as well as Sunday morning services at 10 a.m. The New Church is a progressive Christian church open to all faiths who strive to do the good that love does.
